Track learner progress with 7taps Microlearning using Single Sign-On

The 7taps product team thinks about 3 core parts of the product when building out new capabilities. We focus on helping our customers:

  1. Quickly create fun and engaging microlearning courses.
  2. Sharing these courses with learners, on ANY device.
  3. Measure the impact.

Measuring the impact is a critical part of the 7taps product offering. It is the way our customers show just how effective their microlearning courses are. In our last microlearning product update (published in July 2024) we announced a major enhancement to support customers with tracking learner progress as they take microlearning courses.

What is single sign-on

Single sign-on (SSO) is a method to authenticate learners before they get access to courses that may contain privileged material using their existing company-provided login credentials. By enabling SSO, organizations can ensure that courses cannot be accessed by unauthorized people, regardless of how those courses are shared. The learner experience for authorized learners is seamless and easy.

How it works

  1. User Access: A learner tries to access a 7taps course.
  2. Redirection: 7taps redirects the user to the identity provider (i.e. Okta, Microsoft) for authentication.
  3. Authentication: The learner enters their credentials on the identity provider's login page.
  4. Token Generation: Upon successful authentication, the identity provider generates a security token containing learner information.
  5. Token Transmission: The identity provider sends the token back to the service provider.
  6. Access Granted: 7taps validates the token and grants the learner access to the courses.

Once a valid token is in place, 7taps can authenticate the learner without requiring the learner to enter credentials again (until the token expires). 7taps uses SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) for SSO authentication which is the primary method used in enterprise environments.

7taps supports any SSO provider with SAML based authentication. This includes: Microsoft, Okta, Google, and many others.

How to track learner progress with single sign-on

For customers with Single Sign-On (SSO) enabled, tracking learner progress is even easier and will happen regardless of how courses are shared. Courses shared via any of the available methods will capture all learner statistics and map those statistics back to individual learners.

By default, 7taps tracks learner progress and statistics, however we may not be able to map these statistics to individual learners. It all depends on how you share the courses. The table below highlights how 7taps tracks learner progress based on the different sharing methods available.

Sharing Method Without SSO With SSO
Static Links Anonymous tracking Named learners
QR Codes Anonymous tracking Named learners
Email Named learners Named learners
Slack Named learners Named learners
Microsoft Team Named learners Named learners
SMS (Text Messages) Named learners Named learners
SCORM Named learners Named learners
xAPI Named learners Named learners

What is the business benefit

The benefits of using these methods to track learner progress are tremendous. 7taps course creators can place QR codes linking to 7taps courses in facilities or static links on internal company pages and know exactly which learners accessed these courses and how they performed on any included assessments. Creators will have all the insights needed to understand the full impact of their microlearning efforts. Courses can be shared using any of the available methods with complete and comprehensive tracking in place.

The top benefits include:

  1. Protect privileged company content
  2. Comprehensive tracking of learner progress regardless of sharing method
  3. Seamless access to 7taps content on any device
  4. No need for constant re-authentication by learners
  5. No more anonymous learners!

What does implementation look like

Implementation of SSO is usually very simple and straightforward. It does require about 30 minutes of time with your organization's IT team. Most organizations already leverage SAML based authentication and integration with it is simple and straightforward.
