Our mission at the Digital Learning Institute is to elevate standards in online learning and provide certification programs that meet the evolving needs of digital education. To achieve this, we have turned our focus towards microlearning and, specifically using 7taps, to craft more engaging and efficient learning experiences.
“ What you need to be thinking of [...] particularly with microlearning is what are the consequences to each of those decisions, which is essentially feedback. What would it look like? Because that's what scaffolds people through the learning experience and that's what scaffolds people through a series of challenges.“

Strategies for implementing microlearning in digital learning
Incorporating microlearning into our curriculum involved breaking down existing case studies into smaller, more manageable pieces, or 'micro scenarios'. Here’s how we approached this transformation:
1. Determine the right mode of delivery
When designing a learning program, your first step should be deciding the mode of delivery. This decision is influenced by your learner personas, learning objectives, and the problem you are addressing.
For example, will the program be fully digital, cohort-based, classroom-oriented, or a mix of these? Technology integration and hybrid models like pre-work, flipped classrooms, or high-flex learning should also be considered.

2. Drill down into learning modalities
Once you've chosen the mode of delivery, you need to decide on your teaching modalities, such as synchronous learning (live sessions), asynchronous learning (self-paced), social learning (peer collaboration), and immersive learning (virtual reality or augmented reality). Microlearning typically falls within the asynchronous mode, offering resources at the learner’s point of need.

3. Design Scenario-Based Learning with Pre-Designed Choices
Scenario-based learning is about immersing learners in contextual situations where they need to make decisions. For asynchronous scenarios, pre-design choices and feedback to guide learners through possible outcomes. This involves designing challenges, mapping out potential decisions, and providing feedback to scaffold the learner's journey.

4. Chunk Content into Microlearning Resources
Convert larger case studies into smaller, microlearning pieces. Previously, we had extensive challenges grouped together. Now, each module within our programs is divided into lessons, and each lesson involves a specific challenge.
5. Leverage AI and Multimedia for Enhanced Engagement
Using tools like 7taps, we add multimedia elements and AI features to bring scenarios to life. Characters in case studies are animated and given a voice, making the experience more immersive. This not only aids in contextual understanding but also helps in maintaining learner engagement.
Results and takeaways
This microlearning approach has provided several benefits in digital learning:
- Accessibility and Flexibility:
Learners can access information at their point of need, whether for deeper understanding or quick reference. - Higher Engagement:
Breaking content into smaller challenges keeps learners engaged and allows for quicker completion. - Reusability of Content:
Microlearning resources can be repurposed for other contexts, such as incorporating them into CPD programs, thereby maximizing their utility. - Enhanced Learning Experience:
The ability to update and localize content quickly ensures the material stays relevant and accessible to diverse learner groups.
“We're getting really good feedback from our students on it [and] having the challenges or the scenarios chopped up as well means that our students are doing these really quickly. You're getting through this in five minutes or less.”
